The Facts About Stormwater Filtration
  • BMP is an acronym for Best Management Practice. EcoSense™ products are highly effective BMPs.

  • EcoSense™ systems comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act NPDES, 40 CFR 122.26 (1999) when used as a pretreatment BMP in stormwater pollution prevention plans. Our system fulfills 3 of the 6 minimum control measures of the NPDES (illicit discharge elimination, post construction runoff control, and pollution prevention. We can also be part of your SPCC plan, which applies to you if you store (3) 55 gallon drums or more of any petroleum product anywhere on your premises.

  • First flush is defined as the first polluted water on parking lots and street surfaces.

Stormwater is rainfall which falls onto all surfaces, absorbent and impervious, which is diverted from streets and roads via a series of underground pipes. Eventually, this water is released into our wetlands and rivers. In some places stormwater includes sewage.
Stormwater = rainwater + pollution
Pollution comes from many different sources, however the two main sources are Point and Non-point sources.
Point Source Pollution
Point source pollution is when high levels of pollution enter a water system such as a wetland or river from one source, such as a factory, fuel station, sewage plant or garbage dump. Point source pollution is usually easy to trace.

Non-Point Source Pollution
Non-point source pollution is when levels of pollution enter a water system at various points and from various sources. This type of pollution is the most difficult to monitor and manage. The most common non-point source of stormwater pollution comes from runoff from parking lots, roofs, etc.

Stormwater collects pollutants as the water makes its way through a catchment. Pollutants can include silt, oils, detergents, fertilizers, litter and plant material.

Internationally the major source of pollutants entering many urban waterways is from stormwater .

Stormwater is the major cause of degradation in waterways and the destruction of marine environments.
